This month in our Meet the Team series, we’re talking to Graduate Software Engineer Declan McVey. A recent addition to the team, we find out more about Declan and how he is settling in to his role at Bridgeall.
Tell us more about your role and what it involves?
I am a Graduate Software Engineer within the SharePoint team at Bridgeall. Currently my role mainly involves creating SharePoint solutions for clients however, I have also undertaken some internal project work and more recently began working on resolving support tickets.
How long have you been working at Bridgeall?
I joined Bridgeall in August 2021.
What do you like most about your job?
Bridgeall has provided me with an environment where furthering my knowledge of tools and technologies has been actively encouraged. I have been supported through two Microsoft certifications since joining last year and continue to expand my knowledge each day. As a graduate, I have found this opportunity and support extremely beneficial in my development.
What does a typical day for you look like?
My days can be quite varied however it will always start with a team meeting in the morning where we will discuss the work we have completed and what we will be working on that day. Following on from this I will make myself a plan for the day and then begin working through this. My work usually consists of completing tasks for clients and working through any new support tickets. Most recently I have been working on the migration of Teams and SharePoint sites and content which I have been utilising PowerShell to achieve.
What is your background?
I completed a degree in Computer-Aided Mechanical Engineering in 2018. This course provided me with the opportunity to experience programming in C++. I developed a major interest in this and knew that I wanted to explore it further once my course concluded. Having attended some part-time Software Development courses, I came across an opportunity to study towards a Masters degree in Software Development and completed this at the end of 2020.
Since joining Bridgeall I have continued to progress my knowledge in this field and have attained the Power Platform App Maker (PL-100) and Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) Microsoft certifications in recent months.
What is it like working at Bridgeall?
I really enjoy working at Bridgeall. Everyone is very friendly, and I feel like I have gotten to know people well despite starting when remote working was already in place. Now that we are returning to the office, I am looking forward to having the opportunity to meet more of the team in person.
How have you found moving to working from home?
I have enjoyed working from home and having regular morning meetings provides me with the opportunity to keep in touch with my colleagues and stay up to date with the work we are completing.
Favourite project you’ve worked on?
It’s quite difficult to say at this stage. I have worked on a few projects since I have started at Bridgeall and really enjoyed different aspects of each and for that reason, at this point, I have enjoyed each equally.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I play bass guitar in a band and enjoy both rehearsing and performing live. I also try to stay active by playing golf and football in my spare time, although it has proven difficult to get back into the habit of this since the festive period.
Something on your bucket list?
I would love to go travelling across America, in the past I have looked into hiring a campervan to do so and I think this would be an amazing way to experience that.
