This month in our Meet the Team series, we’re talking to Stephen McGuire. Stephen is a Senior Software Engineer in the water team at Bridgeall. We find out more about Stephen’s role in the trevi water team and his thoughts on working at Bridgeall.
Tell us more about your role and what it involves?
I’m a Senior Software Engineer in the trevi water team at Bridgeall. As a Software Engineer my role mainly involves a lot of development around our product, trevi forecaster. My job covers ensuring the product appeals to new clients, supporting our existing customers, dealing with queries through the service desk and data analysis. Also, identifying any bugs and sorting those is a big part of the job as well.
How long have you been working at Bridgeall?
Technically I’ve been here for 6 years but not consecutively. I was here for 3 years, left for a while and then came back.
What do you like most about your job?
Probably the variety of work. With the water team you work with lots of different technologies like .NET core for normal development. We also use different Azure components where all the Azure technologies work together, it’s interesting and keeps me on my toes. I also like the people. My team are brilliant, and we all get on really well.
What does a typical day for you look like?
Can you tell us about your background and do you have any Microsoft certifications/exams?
I studied Computer Science in 2012 and I enjoyed the coding aspect of my course. I knew that’s what I wanted to go into. I found out that Bridgeall was hiring for a graduate position through someone who was already working here, so I applied, and the rest is history.
In terms of Microsoft certifications I have my certification in ‘Developing ASP.NET MVC Web Applications.’
What is it like working at Bridgeall?
I really enjoy it. I like the team and for me the company culture is the best. Even in a pandemic we’re going on calls, supporting and catching up with each other. You would be hard pressed to find a better mix of people in one room, or should I say 30+ rooms just now.
How have you found moving to working from home?
It has been different but overall, I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve saved time, money and it’s given me the chance to pay attention to some projects at home like decorating.
Favourite project you’ve worked on?
Trevi forecaster and the different parts for trevi. The product makes it easy for customers to forecast and analyse their bills well in advance of when they normally would. This helps with identifying discrepancies and keeping on top of any issues that might be impacting profitability. I guess I like that it uses lots of different technologies together.
Plus, it’s a great product, every client we have using it has found it beneficial and the feedback we’ve received has been very positive.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Just the usual really. I like rock and metal music; I enjoy reading and of course I make time for lots of Netflix. I also have a giant huskie called Balto who also keeps me quite busy.
Something on your bucket list?
I really want to visit Australia. From what I’ve seen and heard from people who have visited, I think I’d enjoy it.
And finally, a note from Stephen’s boss
“Stephen has been an incredible addition to the Bridgeall water team. We often face very complex issues in our team and Stephen has always risen to the challenge. He is a fantastic problem solver and always goes the extra mile to ensure our customers get the support they need.“ – John Dorans, Solution Architect
