Project Description
Bridgeall was tasked by the general trade union GMB to conduct an audit of their Equal Pay Claims Solution, based on a Power Apps Canvas Application and Power Apps Portal.
The audit was to review the status of the solution and investigate the work needed to scale the solution to work across multiple regions, address the current pain points, and improve the overarching governance and management of the solution from a development perspective.
About GMB Union
The GMB is a general trade union in the United Kingdom which has more than 560,000 members. Its members work in nearly all industrial sectors, retail, security, schools, distribution, utilities, social care, the National Health Service, ambulance service and local government.
Challenges facing GMB Union
The existing applications were built when Power Platform was in its infancy and had therefore become dated. Some features were not working properly, the system was slow and other features were not performing so well. There was also a need for building new features to match the company’s ambitions, but the existing solutions were overly complicated and unstable.
A full Power Apps audit was carried out by our Microsoft certified Power Platform consultants. After an initial kickoff meeting, we agreed priorities to gain some background on the Power App in question and then moved on to the review stage. We reviewed the full Power Platform setup around the application as well as cyber security, best practice, the latest features within Power Apps and more. Our review included:
- Environment setup
- Performance
- Data setup and sources
- Best practice design principles and accessibility
- Change and application lifecycle management
After the review, we produced a full recommendation report sharing our findings and how they can help GMB Union progress. This report highlighted the issues identified with the Power App and provided a roadmap to deal with them. The most important issues were to redesign the interface, as it was confusing and difficult to use, to migrate the SharePoint lists to Dataverse, and to fix the existing connection to their SQL Server data source.
The team now has a full understanding of their Power Apps and a clear set of options to improve the existing solution.
