Two new research studies have identified poor technology as a major contributing factor.
According to a large-scale survey by Opinium Research, UK office workers waste 1.8 billion working hours every year because of outdated technology; with 80 percent of those surveyed stating that they don’t have access to the right technology to support efficient working.
One of the main productivity busters identified is the flood of irrelevant information being received which results in many employees disengaging from their employer and colleagues. Less than half (47 percent) of the information employees receive from inside their organisation is considered relevant with 60 percent of employees ignoring internal communications until brought to their attention.
Poor technology is also a major barrier to remote, flexible working and frustrates employees’ efforts to collaborate with colleagues leading to delays and poor quality work. Only 53 percent of those surveyed feel that internal communications are effective with the average office worker missing important information 4 times a week.
According to the second study by tech retailer Ebuyer, almost one in five UK workers (19%) claim that outdated office technology leads to security risks; with 32 percent stating that poor technology makes them less productive. Over half of those surveyed (57%) said their company hadn’t made them aware of the upcoming end of life for Windows 7.
