Custom development SharePoint & .NET

Heineken is the UK's leading beer and cider producer with a brand portfolio including Bulmers, Strongbow, Foster's, Kronenbourg 1664 and Desperados. The company employs 2,000 people in the UK with offices in Edinburgh, Livingston, Tadcaster, Manchester, London, Hereford and Ledbury.

Following many years of developing some 100+ applications and 1000+ databases in Lotus Notes, Heineken UK took the strategic decision to re-develop and standardise on Microsoft technologies. The key challenge, however, was a lack of internal .NET experience and the need to deliver the programme within a 2 year period.

Bridgeall was selected from a competitive tender as one of Heineken UK's SharePoint .NET and core ASP.NET preferred development partners based on our deep .NET experience, SharePoint know-how, agile development approach and rigorous software engineering discipline. We were able to demonstrate these qualities during the tender exercise through referencing a number of large, complex .NET software development projects successfully delivered for other clients.

With the aim of delivering immediate improvements in business processes, the first project was to transition an Out of Hours Support Manager application from a variety of disparate departmental solutions, both Lotus Notes applications and spreadsheets, into a single application that streamlined the process for the business.

This initial application would lay much of the framework for standardising subsequent applications. To ensure seamless integration, Bridgeall took a wider and longer-term view, developing a set of re-usable components and design elements that could be easily incorporated across the full programme.

Based on our deep knowledge of the full capabilities of the SharePoint platform, combined with our experience of delivering complex ASP.NET solutions, we quickly identified discrete work packages, such as highly performant custom grids and an easy to use reporting module. These were transitioned from other ASP.NET projects into the SharePoint .NET framework, with no compromise on quality or performance.

The Out of Hours Support Manager application was delivered on-budget, fully meeting Heineken UK's quality expectations.

Bridgeall Director, David Kerr, Director of Bridgeall, said:

"We are very pleased that our first engagement with Heineken has been received well. Our aim is to always deliver certainty for our clients. Combining the newly established framework with our agile development approach sets the programme up for continued successful delivery.”

Adrian Chambers, Software Development Manager, Heineken UK

"Working with Bridgeall on this initial project has been very successful. As well as being impressed with the quality of their first delivery, their attitude and collaborative approach to knowledge sharing  has been invaluable in understanding a best practice process for delivering applications in what is a new platform for us. Bridgeall's previous project experience and innovation brought tremendous value to the design challenge that we had. They were able to rapidly retro-fit best-practice designs from previous .NET projects into our first SharePoint solution at short notice. This paved the way for a very effective SharePoint applications framework for HUK.”
